East to West It feels like every time I log online these days or open a copy of Drum Media I read something about Brisbane distortionist AxxOnn. After checking out his latest offering of AxxOnn Remixed, I can safely say the hype is all it's hyped to be. Trying to choose one single to write about was indeed a battle in itself. Firstly, you have fellow comrades Saint Surly + Monster Monster playing with elements of drone in Let's Get It Straight, inducing their favourite hip-hop aspects to build a weird and wonderful combination of monotone and glitch simultaneously. Jonathan Boulet then twists Perfect for Placid into an orchestral dream, a harrowing echo ending out the tune nicely. The biggest toss up however comes between AxxOnn's own remix of If I Had A Heart and The Sea Shall Not Have Them's rework of Perfect for Acid. The first, including the first echoes of lyrics, hauntingly precarious with a grinding axe building a deep intensity. The second, lighter, hopeful, it's soft and makes you want to float away. The best two offerings sitting nicely, side by side. Like a thick, chocolatey desert and a refreshing after mint treat.
